The most important thing with a tattoo: aftercare

A new tattoo needs special care. The skin after surgery is irritated and needs intensive regeneration. If you want the wound to heal quickly, you must follow a few important rules:

  • After the tattoo, the skin should be washed and disinfected immediately. The tattoo artist protects the tattoo with foil to protect it from outside harmful influences and insulate it from bacteria.
  • After 3-4 hours, such a film dressing can be removed and the skin washed gently with lukewarm water and/or an appropriate cosmetic for tattoo cleaning (PH-neutral soap, ideal soap for intimate hygiene).
  • After the wound has been gently but carefully washed, it should be dried. Just with a paper towel. It is important not to rub the irritated skin.
  • Starting now and continuing for the next two weeks: SMORE. You apply Bepanthen Baby Ointment or Bepanthen Tattoo to your tattoo 4 to 5 times a day. Do not let your tattoo get dry during this period, this is detrimental to the recovery and quality of your tattoo.
  • Let the skin breathe as often as possible, so preferably do not cover it with foil.
  • Importantly, scabs will appear on the wound after some time. This is an absolutely normal healing process.
  • However, try not to scratch it, or the ink might disappear. Under no circumstances pick off the scabs. Once the wound has healed, you can assess your tattoo and touch it up if necessary.
  • About 2-3 weeks after the procedure, the wound should be completely healed. How do I know when the healing process is complete? If there are no more scabs, redness or irritation on the skin, we can assume that the wound has healed

WHAT NOT TO DO AFTER A NEW TATTOO?

  • It is important to avoid prolonged bathing for 2-3 weeks after the decoration, and certainly do not use the pool. A quick shower is best during this time. This is because a fresh wound should not be soaked for too long.
  • If the wound is fresh, it is better to refrain from exercise and intensive physical activities. This is because the skin sweats more and this does not promote healing. I have already mentioned that you should definitely avoid swimming pools, which are full of all kinds of bacteria. This is an easy way to get infected. We should also avoid tanning beds and saunas for about 3-4 weeks. Very important is that the wound is not exposed to sunlight.
  • Some time ago, petroleum jelly was the most commonly used cosmetic after a tattoo. Vaseline can be a little too heavy, especially on a fresh wound.

THE TATTOO WON’T HEAL. WHAT CAN BE DONE?

  • It may happen that a tattoo does not heal properly. If you notice that the wound is becoming very red, wash it gently with an antibacterial gel.
  • After washing and very gently drying, apply a thin layer of anti-inflammatory cream.
  • However, if the wound does not calm down and the irritation even worsens, it is best to contact your doctor, who will prescribe a special ointment containing an antibiotic.
